Assignments + Reports (10%)

There will be one or two assignments during the semester. These will be in the form of small research and reports on specific subjects of interest or questions raised during the class. Specifications of all assignments will be released in electronic format ONLY. Assignments are to be submitted personally to your teaching assistant during class or electronically to the lecturer. All assignments that do not satisfy the submission requirements listed above will not be evaluated and will be returned to the students during the next class with mark 0.0.
Assignments should be submitted on their respective due dates (please see a table above). Penalties will apply to all late work, except if special consideration is deemed necessary or unless an extension has been granted by your subject co-ordinator or lecturer. Requests for extensions should be emailed to the lecturer or co-ordinator, prior to the due date.
10% of assignment mark will be deducted for each day it is overdue. All documentation (if any) justifying a late submission must be attached to an assignment.
All assignments must be submitted as hard copy to teaching assistant and electronically to the lecturer. Annotated copies of evaluated assignments will be personally returned to the students no later than 2-3 weeks after the respective submission date.
All assignments are individual assignments and it is expected that all the problems will be solved individually without any cooperation with the other students. If you have any doubts, questions, etc. please consult your lecturer or lab assistant during lab classes or office hours.

Project + Report + Presentation

Weighting: 30 % + 10%

There will be one individual project for each student. Students may choose any topic of their interest as long as it is related to information retrieval as for their project. The topic could require implementation and experiment or it could be a theoretic concept. The size and depth of the project should be justifiable as for a graduate level course project. Students have to present their project in the last two weeks of the class. The assessment of the presentation will be done by other students attending the presentation and teaching assistant and lecturer. Part of presentation mark is for attending and assessing other students' presentations.
